Peat Railways in Lavassaare and Tootsi

The article describes history and present time of an Estonian narrow gauge railway connecting Lavassaare and Tootsi. The first part of the railway from Pärnu to Lavassaare was built in years 1922 - 1924. In 1926 the line was lengthened from Pärnu to Sindi. Unfortunately both parts were later withdrawn (Pärnu – Sindi in 1969 and Pärnu – Lavassaare in 1976). But in 1983 a new narrow gauge line was put into operation. This line connected short local networks at Lavassaare and Tootsi, having length of 24 km. Nowadays the line is still in operation and is used for transport of peat from peat bogs to Lavassaare or Tootsi. For hauling the trains and for shunting at Lavassaare network are used diesel locomotives. Shunting duties at Tootsi are ensured by small electric locomotives.
In 1987 the Museum Railway Society was founded. The company started bulding up a collection of the narrow gauge rolling stock at Lavassaare. So, today you can see there one of the largest collection of narrow gauge vehicles (steam and diesel locomotives, passenger and freight wagons etc.) in Europe.
